Click me Friends and Enemies | Earth is a not a world for any defenseless things Friday, August 17, 2007 It's funny that my brain and emotions were not stable yesterday evening after my sister broke the news that the Yang tze dolphins are now declared extinct. Read that again, EXTINCT. Reading and hearing any flora fauna species becoming critically endangered is still within the tolerance limit of emotions but not extinction. Why not extinction? If I were to cry out to my friends about the extinction of this dolphin species, they will just reply "So?". So what is the significance of the word 'extinction' in this context? Extinction is a word that I don't ever want to hear in my life especially I'm trying to safeguard the environment for our younger and future generations. This is the word, I'm sure, that drives many environmentalists (e.g. zoologists, environmental scientists, environmental officers) in the broader context to save the environment in the first place. We don't want to see and hear the word 'extinction' of species. Come on people. Think for a second about the concerted efforts to save a species and now it is finally gone; forced to extinction. Because you are not working in this field, doesn't mean you should be ignorant and ignorance is never a bliss. My feelings now is best described with this question "What would you feel if your beloved ones (humans, anime/ manga characters, hard disk, pets, etc) die?" This is a torture many environmentalists are undergoing. And all we wanted to do is to safeguard the environment. Is there anything wrong with it? You would surely reply "there's nothing wrong". But think again. How sincere are you saying those words? I remembered the time I was visiting my relatives in Melbourne, Australia. They are nice and warm people but they simply told me "Oh it's good to study about the environment but it's a job that got no money". I studied about the environment not because of money but the desire of simply wanting to see Mother Nature continue flourishing in this unpredictable globalised world. Is there anything wrong with it? I'm fully aware that this is a job that got no MONEY but what is the point of having tonnes of money and living in a polluted world that just shortens your lifespan. I don't think we even want to hear "We are doing a noble thing" or "such an altruistic actions". Why are we doing this in the first place? That's because NO ONE ELSE is doing it. We all bloody DEMAND for cleaner air, cleaner water and cleaner land. But are we all doing our bits in recycling or reuse? I do. What about you? Like my colleague, she just pointed to someone else to take care of the environment. Or we just simply blame the government for polluting the environment. Are we so clever in this matter? But hang on, people. What makes up of the government? They just simply lead us and who is behind them? Ironically, WE, isn't it? I'm extremely angry and sad over the news of the demise of Yang Tze dolphins. Yes, we could say there is a lax of enforcement in China. But where is the ultimate logic is that? The government could make the poachers, whatever, face the music and tighten the laws but are we not the POWER of the government? When the buying stops, the killing stops. How many times have we heard, read and see this slogan? I cannot imagine my little cousin in China challenged my sister to eat dolphin meat. It makes me sick to the stomach. It is nothing wrong to eat dolphin meat whatsoever but you are not in some remote places that you need it for survival! The news of this dolphin seriously killed all hopes of other environmentalists that are trying so so very hard to prevent extinction. It is the worst way to be prepared to face another extinction. I modified this "nice to see, nice to touch, once broken, pay at counter" to "nice to see, nice to touch, once extinct, gone forever." People, please wake up. I'm expressing my thoughts not only for some stupid animals only, I'm saying in a broader context: our overall environment which includes water, air, land, etc. There's an article about we running out of clean water. People, rewind your eyes to that sentence again. Are we going to be happy and satisfy when our drinking water supply REALLY runs out? In the end, human beings are just some selfish bunch of living things who just think we are superior in everything including the force of nature. When did we humans become so arrogant? And you know what? If the dolphin article doesn't make you think of the environment and everyone else, then you have truly forgotten that you are in the same boat as us. Don't dream of a Noah's ark coming to rescue us because no matter what, we need resources for our survival. And whence we getting our resources? The same as Noah in the story; the natural environment. 3 Comments. lol princess princess drama >.< i never even thought of watching it because of how bad the designer looked XD but how is it? » crz4manga on 2007-08-16 10:54:58 Sigh... Another beautiful creature is added to the long list. By the way, I don't think you'll get in trouble with your posting, I was thinking that I would get in trouble if I were to post a comment about it. » Nuttz on 2007-08-17 02:55:28 That sucks, I hate seeing any species going extinct. But sometimes they'll declare an animal extinct and sure enough years later one or two will spontaneously show up somewhere, so have hope. » Bizzle_whore on 2007-08-17 06:21:45
